CREATIVE COACHING – STRATEGIES/SOLUTIONS

|      SCENARIO # 1
• Gather your class assistant to help. Have the assistant to go with the less confident skater and support the child by providing them with a “buddy.”
• Play a game of Simon Says, or another suitable game that will get kids familiar with some of the basic skills.
For example, jump on the board, touch your toes, etc.
• Play Freeze Tag on skateboards, using the coloured gloves. The player wearing the gloves is the leader of the game.
• Reward students for smiling, staying on their boards, helping someone else, etc. Mark off on a chart how many times they tried to go down the ramp. Refer to the chart to track their progressions.
• Give stickers out as rewards for the completion of activities.

|      SCENARIO # 2
• Still observing all the students in your class, sit down with the child who is frustrated. (The child who is frustrated may be a little more dehydrated.)
• Use the whistle to gather everyone’s attention, if need be.
• Ask all the children to drink water. They may be dehydrated.
• Take the children to a cooler area of the park where they can be in the shade, if need be.
• Once they have cooled down, have the kids do a break-out activity or play a quiet game using the gloves (tag) or, once the kids are cooler still, have them play a game of relay basketball, using “change of direction” as a drill. (Land games are of assistance for overall skateboarding skill building.) Or ask the kids what game they would like to play.
• If heat is not an issue, set up a drill that has the kids riding their skateboards and taking turns shooting balls into the basketball hoop.

|      SCENARIO # 3
• Play a game of skate to burn off some energy and use the music player to motivate the students. Use the
• Keep safety in mind.
• Have those who do not observe park safety take a time out.
• Shake it up by introducing a new skill. Perhaps they are bored.
